Fevicol's category ownership through relentless positioning

An industrial and household adhesive brand became so synonymous with its entire product category in India that its brand name is often used generically for the product type itself.

ManufacturingCategory creation

This adhesive brand built its market position over decades through a consistent, single-minded positioning around strength and permanence — memorable advertising built almost entirely around the idea of an unbreakable bond, repeated so consistently across generations of campaigns that it became inseparable from the brand identity.

Beyond consumer advertising, the company invested heavily in reaching carpenters and woodworkers directly — the actual influencers and decision-makers in many adhesive purchase decisions — building trust and habitual use at the trade level, not just through end-consumer brand awareness.

This combination of consistent positioning and trade-level relationship building let the brand achieve a rare outcome: becoming so dominant in category perception that its name is commonly used generically to refer to adhesive products broadly, similar to how some brand names become synonymous with entire product categories.

The brand has since extended into adjacent categories (industrial adhesives, construction chemicals) leveraging the trust built in its original core category, demonstrating how category ownership in one segment can become a platform for expansion into related ones.

the lesson

Decades of single-minded, consistent positioning — reinforced at both the consumer and trade level — can build such strong category association that a brand effectively becomes the default mental reference point for its entire product category.
