Cost leadership
what it means
Winning by being the structurally lowest-cost producer in a category — through scale, process efficiency, or supply chain advantage — and passing enough of that saving to customers to win on price sustainably.
a real example
Discount retail chains built entire operating models — no-frills stores, bulk purchasing, thin overhead — specifically engineered to sustain the lowest prices in their category profitably.
when to use it
Commoditised categories where customers genuinely can't tell providers apart on anything except price, and where the business can build a real structural cost advantage, not just cut margin.
when it backfires
Competing on price without an actual structural cost advantage is a margin race to the bottom that ends when cash runs out, not when a competitor gives up.
