First-mover advantage

what it means

The temporary edge gained by being first into a market — early customer relationships, brand association with the category, and a head start on learning — which fades unless converted into something durable.

a real example

Being first with a water-purification or bottled beverage brand in a new market has repeatedly given companies years of head start in distribution and brand recall that later entrants had to fight hard to overcome.

when to use it

New or newly-defined categories, where the first credible entrant gets outsized attention and can use that window to build real moats before competitors arrive.

when it backfires

First-mover advantage alone fades fast — being first with no durable core (distribution, brand, data, cost structure) just means being first to be overtaken.
