what it means
The speed and reliability with which a marketplace can match supply to demand — a buyer finding a seller quickly, or a seller finding a buyer quickly — which is the real measure of a marketplace's health.

Ride-hailing platforms obsess over how quickly a rider gets matched to a nearby driver, because slow matches (poor liquidity) push both sides to abandon the platform for alternatives.
when to use it
Any two-sided marketplace business, where liquidity — not just total user count — should be the primary health metric tracked and optimised for.
when it backfires
A marketplace with impressive total sign-ups but poor liquidity (long waits, frequent no-matches) loses both sides quietly, even while headline growth numbers look strong.
