The engineering itself was genuinely innovative — sophisticated balancing technology that worked reliably and impressed nearly everyone who tried it in person — but the device launched at a price point far higher than most consumers were willing to pay for a novelty transportation method that solved no widely-felt, urgent problem in most people's daily lives.

Regulatory uncertainty about where the device could legally be used (sidewalks, roads, bike lanes) in various markets added further friction to adoption, and the device found genuine but narrow use in niche applications — security patrols, tourism, warehouse logistics — rather than the mass consumer adoption originally envisioned.

The product became a commonly cited example in business education of impressive engineering that failed commercially because it was built around what the technology could do rather than around a specific, validated customer problem people urgently needed solved.

Genuinely impressive engineering or technology doesn't guarantee commercial success — a product still has to solve a problem real customers feel urgently enough to pay the asking price for, and that has to be validated before building, not assumed.
