Land-and-expand
what it means
Winning a customer with a small, low-risk initial purchase or pilot, then growing the relationship over time into a much larger account once trust and proof are established.
a real example
Enterprise software companies routinely start with one team or one department inside a large company, then expand across the organisation once the initial group proves the value.
when to use it
Selling into organisations with multiple departments or decision-makers, where a single company can become many times more valuable over its lifetime than its first purchase.
when it backfires
If the entry offer is priced or scoped so thin that it never proves real value, there's nothing to expand from — the account stalls at the pilot stage indefinitely.
